How Long Does AREDS 2 Take to Work?
It’s one of the most common questions people ask when starting PreserVision AREDS 2. The honest answer: it isn’t measured in weeks, and “working” doesn’t mean what most people expect. Managing that expectation clearly is one of the most useful things we can do.
AREDS 2 Is Nutritional Support, Not a Treatment
PreserVision AREDS 2 is a food supplement, not a medicine. It is not designed to treat AMD, reverse vision that has already been lost, or produce any immediate or perceptible effect. What the research suggests it does — when taken consistently by the right people — is provide specific nutrients that may support macular health over time and reduce the risk of AMD worsening.
That’s a meaningful thing. But it’s not a cure, and it won’t feel like anything is happening. That’s entirely by design.
What the Five-Year Trial Actually Showed
The 2013 AREDS 2 study followed over 4,000 participants with intermediate AMD or advanced AMD in one eye for an average of five years. The finding: people taking the AREDS 2 formula had approximately 25% lower risk of progressing to advanced AMD compared to those on placebo, over that five-year period.
This is a population-level statistical result. It means that across the group, fewer people progressed to advanced AMD. For any individual, there’s no way to know whether you were in the group that benefited — only that the odds were meaningfully better with the formula than without it.
The study didn’t measure weeks. It measured years.
Why You Won’t Feel It Working
Unlike a painkiller that dulls pain or an antibiotic that clears an infection, AREDS 2 has no perceptible short-term effect. There’s nothing to feel after a week, a month, or even six months. This is completely normal.
You’re supporting the cellular environment of your macula at a nutritional level — a slow, invisible process. Many people stop taking AREDS 2 early, wrongly concluding it isn’t doing anything. This is one of the most common and most avoidable mistakes.
The absence of a noticeable effect is not evidence that it isn’t working. It’s exactly what you should expect from a nutritional supplement studied over years, not days.
Consistency Matters More Than Anything
The AREDS 2 trial was based on daily supplementation — 2 soft gels per day, every day. Skipping doses, stopping and restarting, or taking it irregularly doesn’t reflect how the trial was conducted and undermines the rationale for taking it at all.
There’s no evidence of any benefit from a short course. This is not like antibiotics where a fixed duration does the job. AREDS 2, if appropriate for you, is a long-term daily commitment. The nutrients also absorb better with food — take them with a meal that contains a little fat.
Monitoring Is How You Track Progress
Regular eye tests are the actual mechanism for tracking whether AMD is stable or advancing. AREDS 2 is one part of a broader management approach — it doesn’t replace monitoring.
Your optician will advise how often you should be seen. An Amsler grid — a simple printed grid available from opticians or online — is a useful home tool for checking whether your central vision is stable between appointments. If straight lines on the grid start to look wavy or bent, contact your optician promptly.
Choosing the Right Pack Size
If you’re starting AREDS 2 for the first time, the 90-capsule pack provides around six weeks of supply at the recommended two soft gels per day — a sensible amount to start with. For ongoing use, the 120-cap (~2 months) or 210-cap (~3.5 months) packs offer better value and fewer reorder gaps.
